▼ 「天国のスプーンと地獄のスプーン」の出典 
前回の「ドラッカーの95歳の詩」の例のように、「名言」や「いい話」の中には出典があやふやなまま流布してしまっているものが少なくない。
たとえば、ダーウィンは「最も強いものや最も賢いものが生き残るのではない。最も変化に敏感なものが生き残るのだ」とは言っていないし、アインシュタインは「ミツバチがいなくなったら、人類は四年で滅亡する」とは言っていない。二宮尊徳は「道徳なき経済は犯罪であり、経済なき道徳は寝言である」などとは言わない。
「誰が言ったかは重要ではない、大切なのは内容だ」という立場もあるだろうが、私はそういう立場はとらない。誰が言ったのかは重要である。95歳のピーター・ドラッカーが言ったのと64歳のドン・ヘロルドが言ったのでは受け止め方が違ってくる。
以前、別の場所にも書いたことがあるが、出典があいまいな「いい話」の代表格として、「天国のスプーンと地獄のスプーン」という話がある。
有名な話なので知っている人も多いと思うが、いちおう紹介しておこう（引用は生きる言葉 ：名言・格言・思想・心理による）。
ある日，地獄へ行ってみると，たくさんの亡者が丸いテーブルを囲んで座っています。テーブルの上にはたくさんのごちそうが並べられているのに，亡者たちはそれを食べることができず，飢えに苦しんでいました。よく見ると，亡者たちの片腕が椅子に縛り付けられ，もう一方の腕にはものすごく柄の長いスプーンがくくりつけられています。亡者たちは，懸命にテーブルの上の食べ物をスプーンですくって食べようとするのですが，柄が長すぎて口にもってくることができません。ということは，地獄には食べ物がないわけではない。食べ物があっても食べられないから，そこが地獄なのです。ところが，あるとき天国へ行ってみると，人々はごちそうのならんだ丸いテーブルを囲み，互いににこにこ笑いながら話し合っています。飢えなどまったく関係ありません。見ると，地獄と同じようにみんな片腕が椅子に縛りつけられ，もう一方の腕に柄の長いスプーンがくくりつけられています。なのに，どうしてこんなに地獄と違うのでしょうか。
見ていると，天国の人たちは，スプーンですくった食べ物を自分の口に入れようとはしていません。テーブルの向かい側の人の口に入れてあげているのです。向かい側の人たちは，こちら側の人の口に入れてくれています。 そう、天国の人たちはお互いに助け合いながら生活しているのです。
トルストイ「天国と地獄」
こんなふうに、トルストイの「天国と地獄」が出典と書かれている場合も多く、TOSS（教育技術法則化運動）のサイトでも「トルストイの名作「天国と地獄」を通して，子どもが真剣に考える授業」とあるが、実のところトルストイに「天国と地獄」という作品はない。生徒から「この話はトルストイのどの本に載ってるんですか？」と質問されたら、先生はどう答えるんだろうか。「いい話」だから出典は間違っていてもいい、という態度は、疑似科学を道徳の授業に使うのとそう変わらないのではないか。
また、出典がダンテの『神曲』であるという主張もある（シルバーバーチは語るより）。
本当の生命原理の鉄則と言うのは、お互いがお互いのために自分を役立てるということなんですよね。「ダンテの神曲」の中の長いスプーンで食べる食事風景の話って知っていますか？鈴木：知らないです。
有希：お話の中に天国と地獄の食事風景があるらしいんですよ。で、天国にも地獄にも同じように丸いテーブルがあって、そこにはご馳走が山のように積んであって、その回りにみんな座って食事をするんですけど、みんなお腹ペコペコなんです。でも、そこに長いスプーンが置いてあって、これで食べなければいけないという規則があるんです。地獄の方はどうかというと、一生懸命食べようとするんだけど口に入れようとするとポロポロこぼれてしまうんですね。それぐらい長いスプーンなんです。なかなか食べられないから、お腹は空いたままだし、残り少なくなってくると、我先に取ろうとして争いがひどくなってくるんです。では天国はどうかというと、自分はペコペコなんだけど、回りの人もお腹が空いているように見えると、自分は後でいいからと言って反対側の人に食べさせてあげるんです。そうすると相手も自分に食べさせてくれるんですね。食事が無駄にならずに、すぐお腹がいっぱいになったという、そういう話なんです。だから、本当にお互いがお互いのためにしているだけで、すぐに充実するし、何も無駄はないし、いさかいも起こらないということを教えてくれてます。これってすごくいい話だなぁと思ったんです。金八先生でもやっていましたね。

ペ：ダンテの話だとは知らなかったな。仏教の話だと思っていました。
ダンテの『神曲』は最近河出文庫版を読んだばかりだが、そんな場面はなかった。ついでにいえばダンテの地獄はそんなに生ぬるいものではない。
一方、仏教ではスプーンが箸に変わり、「三尺箸の譬え」という名で知られており、お坊さんが説法などで使うことがあるようだ。「三尺三寸箸」（なぜ三寸伸びたのかは不明）という和食レストランチェーンの名前にもなっている。しかし、「地獄・極楽の食事風景」というページで検証されているとおり、この寓話で描かれる地獄と極楽は、正統的な仏教の地獄・極楽風景とはかなり異なっている。また、検索したかぎりでは、この説話が「三尺箸の譬え」という名前で知られるようになったのはかなり最近のことのようである。
私の知るかぎり、この寓話が仏教方面で最初に使われたのは、鎌田茂雄『華厳の思想』（1983年）という本である（講談社学術文庫版でp.167-168）。
比喩の話で、地獄と極楽とどこがちがうかというと、どちらも同じように円卓につき、ごちそうがいっぱい並んでいるが、地獄の人たちは椅子に坐り左手は縛られていて、右手だけに長いスプーンが結びつけられている。それで「めしを食え」と鬼に言われる。さあ、食べようと思っても、椅子に固定して縛られて、長いスプーンなので遠くのごちそうしか届かず、それをすくって食べようとすると、パーンとみな背中にいってしまって口に入らない。背中はごちそうのくずだらけだが、みな痩せ細って、「おまえがぶつけたからこっちへいった」と言ってどなる、「なんだ、おまえぱかり伸ばすからおれが取れない」とどなる。
ところが極楽は、まったく同じ場面だが、こちら側のA君は円卓の向かい側のB君に、「お先にどうぞ」といって、長いスプーンにごちそうを入れてB君の口にやる。B君はそれをいただいて「ありがとうございました、お先にいただきました。それでは……」といってB君もまた長いスプーンでごちそうをすくって「さあ、どうぞ」とA君にやる。A君も、「どうもありがとう」といただく。
地獄と極楽は同じ舞台設定なのだが、極楽の人はみなニコニコしておいしいものを食べ合っている、地獄の人は全部背中へとばしている。同じ舞台であっても、ちょっとした悲の動きによって地獄にも極楽にもなるのだということをよくいうが、まさに法蔵が、なぜ頓教ではいけないのか、なぜ円教でないといけないのかというのは、仏国土の現成ということを考えているわけである。
ここでは箸ではなくスプーンとなっているが、出典は特に記されていない。
では海外ではどうなのか、と調べてみると、やはり前回の老人の詩と同じ『こころのチキンスープ』という本に行き着く。さらに"long","spoon", "hell"などでサーチしてみると、アーニー・ラーセンというアメリカの説教師のページなどいくつかのサイトが見つかるが、出典はあいまいである。
さらにいろいろと探してみてようやくたどりついたのが、アーヴィン・ヤーロムという精神科医が書いた『集団精神療法の理論と実践』（Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy）という本である。この本の冒頭に、こんな説話が書かれているのである（訳は筆者）。
ユダヤ教敬虔主義の古い説話がある。天国と地獄について神と対話をしたラビの話である。「地獄を見せてあげよう」と神は言われ、ラビをある部屋に案内した。部屋の中央には大きな丸いテーブルがあり、まわりに座る人々は飢えて絶望した様子だった。テーブルの真ん中には、全員に行き渡るくらいの量のシチューが入った大きな壺があり、おいしそうな匂いにラビは思わず唾を飲み込むほどだった。テーブルのまわりの人々はとても柄の長いスプーンを持っていた。そのスプーンでは壺からシチューをすくうことはできるが、スプーンの柄は腕よりも長いので、口に運ぶことはできないのだった。ラビは彼らがひどく苦しんでいる姿を見た。
「それでは、天国を見せてあげよう」と神は言われ、ラビと神は別の部屋に向かった。その部屋は、最初の部屋とまったく同じに見えた。同じ大きな丸いテーブルがあり、人々は同じように長い柄のスプーンを持っていた。しかし彼らは満ち足りてふっくらとしていて、笑いながら話していた。最初、ラビはどうしてなのか理解できなかった。神は言われた。「簡単なことだ、彼らはお互いに食べ物を与えあうことを学んだのだよ」
ヤーロムといえば、集団精神療法の第一人者である。さらにこの本は、集団精神療法のバイブルともいわれていて、1970年の初版以来現在まで何度も版を重ねている名著（ただし日本では未訳）。この本を読んだ数多くのセラピストたちが世界中に広めた可能性は高そうである。
気になるのは「ユダヤ教敬虔主義の古い説話」（原文では"Old Hasidic story"）という部分だが、ヤーロム自身ユダヤ人であり、ユダヤ教についてそういい加減なことをいうとは思えない。また、この寓話で描かれる地獄像は、キリスト教の地獄にも仏教の地獄にも合致しないが、はっきりとした天国・地獄の概念のないユダヤ教のものと考えると、なるほどしっくりとする。
それでは本当にユダヤ教の説話にこの話があるのだろうか、と調べてみると、1966年に出版されたユダヤ教徒向けの聖書（もちろん旧約だ）の注釈書"The Rabbi's Bible"に、地獄では長いスプーンとフォークで食事をするという寓話が出てくるのである（天国については書かれていない）。ユダヤ教の説話であるというのは間違いないようだ。
さらに、Mosh Krancという人物の"The hasidic masters' guide to management"というユダヤ教徒向けの経営書には、ロムシショクのラビ・ハイム(Rabbi Haim)という巡回説教師の語ったエピソードとして描かれている。このバージョンでは、スプーンは特に長くはなく、そのかわり腕に添え木を当てられて曲げられないということになっている。
ロムシショクとは、ルンシスケスとも呼ばれるリトアニアの村である（かつてはユダヤ人村だったがホロコーストで住人は殺され、1950年代にはダム湖に沈んだ）。さらに調べるとRabbi Chaim from Rumshishok(1813-1883)という説教師が実在し、比喩に富んだユーモラスな説法で有名だったというから、もしかするとこの人物がこの寓話を生み出したのかもしれない（確証はない）。
ともあれ、もともとはユダヤ教の説話で、1970年に精神科医アーヴィン・ヤーロムが著書に書き、それがきっかけで世界に知られるようになったようだ、というのが現時点での結論である。
どうでもいいが、私としては、腕にスプーンをくくりつけられたり添え木を当てられたりするホラー映画みたいな天国は、いくら天国だろうが御免被りたいところである。
『華厳の思想』の著者は民俗学者で神道ソングライターの鎌田東二さんではなく、今は亡き仏教学の大家、鎌田茂雄さんですぜ。図らずも出典が違うとイメージが違う好例で、初見びっくらこきました。^^;

この話、1970年代前半に祖父の法事でお坊さんの講話として<br>聞いた記憶があります。もちろん天国ではなく極楽、スプーン<br>ではなく長い箸となってました。その場で唯一、子供の私にも<br>わかる内容の話だったので印象が強かったです。
私は幼稚園から中学卒業（70年代後半から８０年代中盤）までカソリックの<br>教会学校に通わされておりましたが、その教会学校で神父様がこの話をしてました。<br>おそらく小学校４年生の時の担任神父だったと思います。<br>天国とは随分めんどくさいところだなあと思ったのを良く覚えてます。
